A day is the rare dataset with a fixed total: exactly 24 hours, no more available at any price. That makes time use a natural pie chart, and this example charts a fairly typical working day, with the labels showing hours rather than percentages.

What the chart shows

Sleep and work claim 8 hours each, and together they consume two thirds of the circle. That is the first insight, and it lands harder as geometry than arithmetic: most of the day is spoken for before any choices begin. The remaining third, 8 hours, is where an entire life outside work has to fit.

Watch how quickly it goes. Leisure takes 3 hours, the largest discretionary block. Meals take 1.5. Then a run of one-hour slices: chores, commuting, family time. And at the end, exercise: half an hour, a slice so thin it needs a leader line to hold its label. The chart is honest about something schedules obscure: the difference between “I have 8 free hours” and how those hours actually fragment into slivers.

Two comparisons inside the chart do useful work. Commute versus leisure is 1 to 3: for every three hours of free time, one hour sits in transit, a ratio remote workers will read with satisfaction. And exercise versus leisure is 0.5 to 3, a six-fold gap that many people discover only when they see their day drawn. Nothing shames a stated priority like a proportional slice.

Design choices in this chart

The labels show names and hour values, not percentages, because nobody plans their day in percent. The fixed whole does the percentage work silently: readers see that sleep is a third of the circle without needing “33%” printed. This is a case where the right label unit is the domain’s own.

Slices are ordered by size, big anchors first. A defensible alternative is chronological order, morning to night around the clock face, which suits a chart meant to mirror the day’s rhythm; size order was chosen here because the point is allocation, not sequence. The sunset palette gives the two dominant slices deep, settled tones and the small slices brighter ones, which keeps the slivers findable.

Log one real day, then load the Daily Time Use template and overwrite the eight values. Resist averaging a hypothetical week: one truthful Tuesday teaches more than a smoothed composite, and the discipline of making the numbers sum to 24 exposes double-counted hours immediately.

Do the values have to sum to exactly 24?

For a day chart, yes, and it is a useful discipline: if your categories total 27 hours, the data contains wishful thinking. The editor charts any total, so check the sum yourself.
