This example charts the final letter grades of a 120-student cohort. The data is illustrative but shaped like a real distribution, and the example doubles as a case study in charting ordered categories, which grades are.
What the chart shows
The distribution has a healthy middle. B is the largest slice with 41 students, roughly a third of the class, flanked by C with 32 and A with 26. Together the A-to-C range covers 99 of 120 students, about 82 percent of the circle, and that continuous sweep of passing grades is the chart’s dominant visual: most of this class is fine.
The remaining arc is where a teacher’s eye goes. D and F together account for 21 students, 17 percent or one student in six. As a number in a gradebook, 21 is easy to slide past; as a visible wedge of the class circle, it argues for attention. That is the pedagogical use of this chart: proportions convert administrative data into something that provokes a decision.
The shape also invites comparison against expectations. This distribution leans mildly generous, with more A’s than F’s by a wide margin and its peak at B rather than C. Names sit on the slices as plain letters, large enough that the legend became unnecessary and was switched off.
One honest note on chart choice: statisticians would reach for a bar chart here, and for analyzing many classes or fine-grained scores they would be right, since bars support precise comparison along the ordered scale. The pie version exists for the parents’ evening and the student-facing summary, where part-of-the-whole is the question actually being asked.
